Crypto crashed – oops sorry there is a “crypto winter” and apparently it is important for CPAs to be aware of. Midsize companies have shitty technology. “Deloitte Consulting Analyst has obtained a minimum base increase of 15% since May 2021” is something relevant to PwC UK staff get 9% pay rise to offset cost of living according to a Redditor although we don’t know why. EY partners are expected to vote on separation of audit and board by fall. ESG is up for grabs and Big 4 companies should take advantage, at least according to the MEP who said that the companies have a “de facto monopoly which will allow them to charge whatever they want in a few years, once they have conquered most of the market”. Oh and Going Concern’s oldest troll says nice things about us which I believe is one of the four signs of the apocalypse so, you know, be on the lookout for the horses and the plague or whatever.

Now for a little housekeeping. We have undertaken a gargantuan plan to organize our massive archive and update some useful articles we’ve published over the years (like this one on accounting as a second career). It’s ongoing and we’ll be at it for a while – not to brag or anything, but our archives are HUGE – and when we’re done, you’ll be able to search past career advice, get answers specific to your service line, delve into advice written only for people in your place in the accounting firm hierarchy and for the masochists in the crowd we list our nastiest responses – uh, tough love. You’ll find answers to questions you didn’t even know you had! Because what you really need in your life is more problems to add to your “things to worry about” folder. Stay tuned!

Here’s what we’re working on this week:

  • Debunking the scary headlines about how today’s labor market is falling to employers (it’s not)
  • Have you ever wondered how to cheat on the CPA exam? We will tell you
  • A profile of a successful CPA who’s never spent a day working for a Big 4 company, proving your professors wrong when they said if you don’t go straight to the Big 4, you won’t. nowhere
  • A rags-to-riches story of a low-paid former Big 4 consultant turned successful influencer
  • Is it time to break up with your Big 4 business? A quiz

And finally, a few carryovers from previous weeks that we haven’t touched on yet: a letter to the one person who wants to stay in public, some CPA exam numbers the AICPA is scaring off, most requested credentials, other things I forgot. doesn’t really matter.

If there’s a title you’ve saved to Pocket that you think we should talk about, text us at 202-505-8885 (I won’t sign you up for Cat Facts, I promise), email [email protected] or me @inkywretch and we will get there.

Finally, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has a live jelly cam you might be interested in, watching Scyphozoa is a much better use of your time than picking fights on Twitter for sure:

I hope everyone is having a good week and I mean it.
