SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – If your income is $58,000 or less, you may be eligible for a free tax return.
Every Monday night in February, Drury University accounting students will be offering tax preparation services. They will also do so on Saturday, February 12.
This is a walk-in clinic. Drury University asks you to wear a mask and only bring your spouse.
“Our program accounting majors have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in their coursework to help the community at large,” said Tiffany Cossey, professor of accounting at Drury University. “There are so many needs for this type of service. It can get really expensive if you go to a paid picker and not everyone can afford it. We are happy to help the community for free.
Bring photo ID, proof of social security number, and your tax documents.

Drury University press release
Drury University students will again provide free tax preparation through an IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site. The annual tax preparation service is open to the public and is designed to benefit low-income taxpayers.
Drury will assist walk-in community members. The service will be offered at the Breech School of Business, on the northeast corner of Central Street and Drury Lane. In order to help prevent the spread of Covid, all taxpayers will be required to wear a mask in the building. The public is invited to enter the building through the doors located on the south side of the building (left side facing the building). Upon arrival, taxpayers will be asked to add their name to a waiting list and then return to their car or another location to wait to be called. Taxpayers will not be able to gather in the building before the opening of the drop-off clinic or while waiting to be served. Taxpayers are also asked to bring a cell phone so that we can contact them when it is their turn for assistance. Also, to limit contact, Drury asks that only the taxpayer and his spouse be present at the filing forms. Children and other parties will not be permitted to accompany the taxpayer unless such accompaniment is necessary to assist the taxpayer.
Clinics will take place at the following times:
Monday, February 7 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Monday, February 14 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Monday, February 21 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Monday, February 28 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Saturday, February 12 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Please note that the clinic only operates during posted hours. Drury faculty, staff and students will not be available to assist you at other times. Only professors and students who are part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program can assist taxpayers. Regular faculty, staff, and students will not be able to assist the public with taxes or tax information.
All returns will be filed electronically unless the IRS requires manual reporting. All taxpayers must be available to sign the appropriate forms in the event of joint filings. Tax returns will only be transmitted after the taxpayer has returned to collect the completed return and sign the required authorization forms.
Taxpayers are required to bring photo ID and Social Security cards for themselves and dependents, and any tax documentation they received, including all W-2 forms, 1099 forms and statements issued by brokerage firms. Taxpayers are also encouraged to bring a copy of their 2019 state and federal tax returns to expedite the filing process.
Due to limits set by the federal government, volunteer income tax assistance programs are not able to assist taxpayers who have declared bankruptcy or become insolvent during the tax year. tax, have rental property, have a self-sustaining business with inventory, depreciable property, or had an overall loss for the year and certain situations where a taxpayer has obtained debt forgiveness.
