As an assistant professor in the graduate program at Fairleigh Dickinson University, I need to be peer-reviewed. This is a fairly common process and I have had such examiners in my courses. This year I was sent a copy of the criteria that will be used and I realized that there were many issues that could apply to any review of staff or partners as a supervisor, so I decided to share it here, with some edits for this column:
Knowledge: Demonstrated mastery of the subject;
Communication: Clear and articulate speech that can be understood and able to convey course content clearly and effectively;
Enthusiasm: Enthusiastic about teaching, exudes a positive attitude, interested in the field;
Attitude: Showed an active interest in students and their learning and treated students and their contributions with respect;
Organization: presented material in a logical and organized manner that can be followed and used class time effectively;
Preparation: The instructor was well prepared for the lesson and clearly specified lesson objective and summarized the main points;
Technics: Used techniques and teaching aids appropriate for the given class and subject area (illustrations, equipment, blackboard, Zoom, etc.);
Rigor: The class was conducted in a way that encouraged critical thinking and active learning and participation;
Relevance: Material presented newsworthy and relevant;
Captivation: Material presented in a way that maintains students’ interest and attention;
Rhythm: The pace of the lesson seemed appropriate for the subject matter;
Interaction: Encouraged participation and responded effectively to student comments or questions.
Although the above refers to students, it can be used as a guide to assess anyone in a supervisory position. Also ask students or taught staff to use it as a bottom-up assessment. I think this list can present great ways to ensure better teaching and learning, and to empower students and staff as participants in the process.
