HAMLET — Two days after Brooke Deegan graduated from Richmond Community College in May 2017, she went to work for Dawkins and Associates Insurance Agency in Rockingham, launching her accounting career.

Today, Deegan works for Relation Insurance Services, where she is an accounting specialist. She helps process accounts payable invoices across all business units in the agency.

A graduate of Richmond Senior High School and a first-generation student, Deegan wasn’t always sure what she wanted to do, but she enrolled at RichmondCC because it was close to home and affordable. .

“I was initially enrolled in the medical assistance program. After taking a few classes, I realized it wasn’t for me. I started thinking about what could possibly pique my interest and what I would like to do,” Deegan said.

In high school, Deegan had taken accounting classes which she loved, so she decided to try the accounting and finance program at RichmondCC. She learned quickly and had great instructors in all of her classes.

Deegan said these four instructors had a big impact on his life: Matilda Davis, Kim Parsons, Donna Tedder and Jennifer Lambeth.

“They all treated their students with respect and prepared us not only for our tests and exams, but also for real life. They were always ready to step in and help me explain anything I needed further explanation on and make sure I understood it,” Deegan said.

Matilda Davis, coordinator of the accounting and finance program at RichmondCC, said Deegan was an excellent student.

“Brooke came to class eager to learn and she communicated effectively in team projects. I knew she would be successful in the accounting workforce,” Davis said.

Deegan worked for three years as an accountant at Dawkins and Associates before being sold to another company.

“My new employer gave me the opportunity to get my North Carolina insurance license because a local accountant was not required. I got my license and became an insurance agent in 2020. It was good, but I knew it wasn’t where my heart was. In January 2021, we underwent another agency change and merged with Relation Insurance,” Deegan said.

Deegan is now back in accounting and she recently got a promotion with the insurance agency. After earning her associate’s degree in accounting from RichmondCC, she enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Accounting program at Gardner-Webb University.

“While I was at RichmondCC, Ms. Lambeth had someone from Gardner-Webb come and talk to our class about the great opportunities they offer and how our credits would transfer to their university,” said Deegan.

RichmondCC has a guaranteed admission and graduation program with Gardner-Webb University called Bulldog Bound. This provides a seamless transition for RichmondCC graduates.

Due to a busy work schedule, Brooke is no longer enrolled at Gardner-Webb. However, she plans to return to school once she settles into her new job.

“I love what I’m doing now. I feel like RichmondCC and their professors have set me up for academic success,” Deegan said. “These professors go above and beyond for their students and really care about them. “I also met some amazing people during my time at RichmondCC. I would definitely recommend RichmondCC to anyone.”
